“A kind of dream bookshop and small town cafe.” Author Neil Gaiman
There are some places in life we are drawn to time and time again, that are invigorating and comforting at the same time. For me it’s a bookshop with coffee and a decent scone, based in the beautiful village of St Boswells, called Mainstreet Trading
. Owners, husband and wife team Rosamund and Bill de la Hey, are passionate about books, coffee and the pleasure of shopping for beautiful things. With a national reputation, this multiple award winning business, featured in Country Living
magazine, The Telegraph
and many others, has become a must stop destination in the Borders.
The bookshop stocks over 7,500 titles, with a children’s section, from Edward Ardizzone to Harry Potter and a book burrow. It caters for readers of all ages and tastes, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, they can order it from a range of over 750,000 titles, for next day delivery. The latest books are laid out on tables for you to browse easily. They keep a good stock of books on food and I rarely leave without buying at least on new cookery book.

THE cafe and delicatessen
The bustling cafe offers a light lunch menu as well as delicious cakes, fruit juices, coffee and freshly brewed teas. On a sunny day you can sit outside in the courtyard sun trap. Take a look at the gallery of famous authors who’ve visited and the display on the history of the building. Check out their website or sign up for their newsletter to hear news about author events
The deli like the bookshop stocks local foods and a marvellous range of Spanish delicacies. There’s a well-tended cheese counter, organic meats from Peelham Farm, local fruit and vegetables and beautiful real bread. The adjacent gift shop has a selection of antiques and unusual gifts for children and adults. The place to go if your looking for a special gift from your holidays or just a little something for yourself.
Don’t miss taking a peek at their newly converted Citroen Fire Engine, which will take real, live authors and illustrators into local schools.
